Like many people in the UK, I was confused to hear why this year’s Early May Bank Holiday was moved to a Friday. The reason: VE Day!
WHAT IS VE DAY?
This year is the 75th VE Day Anniversary which celebrates Victory in Europe Day, the day Prime Minister Churchill made a broadcast to the nation, announcing the end of the war with Germany to Great Britain on Tuesday 8th May 1945.
It’s estimated that upwards of 70 million people died as a result of World War Two, with around 450,000 civilian and military deaths from the UK. This is a time to celebrate the end to one of the most horrific wars the world has ever seen and remember those who fought to risk their lives and the survivors who live amongst us today.
…we have never seen a greater day than this!
Winston Churchill, 8th May 1945
