In typical Lizzie style, whilst trying everything and anything, this post may be a few months late. I am well aware I’m not a food blogger, but this is my blog where I post about the things I enjoy, and this is one of the best food places I went to in 2023.
Back in August, my boyfriend and I went to The Coach in Marlow, for a joint birthday meal, inviting friends along too (meaning we also got to see more of the food!).

About The Coach
If you’re not familiar with The Coach, it is a Michelin-starred pub that typically serves British dishes in micro-form, i.e. a mini roast dinner, but they’re super filling. And if I’m correct, is one of the only pubs in the UK to have one, popular by notable chef Tom Kerridge.
Compared to other Michelin starred restaurants, this pub is a ‘bargain’, but still bites into your wallet.

Tables are limited, with a booking service that opens only a few times a week as it’s in demand – and I can see why. Not only are the meals exquisitely made and delicious, but the pub is also incredibly intimate and well looked after, boasting rich red velvet seating, high curved stools if you fancy looking at the kitchen or bar, and incredible service by the waiting staff. It was such a wonderful summer evening, that the window next to us opened onto the High Street: bliss.
Prices
The menu is small and changes often (sometimes daily), with starters, mains and puddings ranging from around the £10 mark, up to just over £30. Drinks vary from £3 for a lemonade (it was a tiny bottle so I stuck to the 1), up to £20 for a cocktail!

Food!
Okay, you’ve got to the main event: what’s the food like?!
My friend, nothing can describe the incredible sensation that occurred on my tastebuds that day. It was a time like no other.
I ordered the harissa quail, potatoes, and a treacle tart for pudding,
I was charged £8 for 3 fat potatoes, but little me thought, ‘pfft, that’s not going to fill me up’… don’t be fooled. They filled me!
I’ll let you judge the beautiful food here:

Starter: mini risotto
Mains

The iconic, and very popular, Coach Burger

Cottage/Shepherds Pie and Roast Beef

Rose & Harissa quail – because 1 photo isn’t enough, you need both to do it justice… this was so divine
Puddings

My boyfriend opted for a Pineapple and mango choux bun with salted caramel rum sauce… he loved it that much I have the following quote from him:
‘This is in my top 5 things I have ever eaten. Best dessert I’ve ever eaten. And I couldn’t stop thinking about it for a week after… I find myself thinking about it even now, all the time. It’s my Roman empire.’ Lizzie’s boyfriend, quoted January 2024
I had the Treacle Tart with Clotted Cream; whilst it was a small portion, it was just about right, where both complemented each other perfectly. Any more would have been too gluttonous!
Our friend had the mini Meringue Sorbet: refreshing and sufficiently sweet
Without a doubt, The Coach is the best place I have ever eaten, and I can’t wait to go back… but it’s specifically for special occasions.
Don’t want to be too gluttonous now, do we?!
