It’s the start of the summer holidays, which means for someone dating a teacher, I was finally able to snatch some time away with my fiancé (and dog, Harry), where we headed down to the South Coast for a few days. And it was glorious.
Even though it was only three days, it got me thinking about why rest is so important, especially coming from someone who found the concept completely alien over 5 years ago – and is still learning what it truly means to REST.
Why it’s okay to rest
Here’s your reminder that resting is okay – and important.
It’s too easy to get swept up in a ‘first world problems’ mindset and worry about why you may be stressed, feel tired, or are in need of a break – you’re only human.

Why I rest
I rest not just because my body needs it, but because as humans, we need to. Seems obvious, right? We sleep everyday, but sometimes that’s not enough. The daily stresses of work and life can take their toll, teetering on making us burn out if we’re not too careful (exhibit A, yours truly).
It’s easy to get carried away by it all, and before you know it, another year has flown by.
Life is for living: we work to live, not live to work.
That’s why I believe it’s so important to have something to look forward to, where energy, time and finances allow.

So, why do you rest?
Why I’m resting:
- To manage overall stress
- Physically recover – stress and the gut are so closely linked
- The doctor confirmed I’m stressed, great
- To switch off for work – I actually did!
- Creatively recover
- Finished my 2nd book! Time to take a break before going back to book 1 edits
- Reflect on where I want my career and life to go
The last one sounds deep, but it’s so easy to forget and focus on ourselves, especially when work and family takes priority. Taking a break truly helps you appreciate what life is really about.
Work should be the last thing.

A little trip away
Along the South Coast, the weather was on our side, meaning we got to pop out each day to Worthing, Lancing and Brighton. We loved spending time with each other again – as we can often become too focused on our careers (yes, it’s a thing) – had cuddles and walks with Harry by the beach, basked in the sun, enjoyed good food (Woods burger and Mr Bagel in Worthing… I’ll say no more), and read (and bought) lots of books.

Everyone rests differently
Everyone likes to rest differently. For example, I prefer to do something, even if it means reading a book, writing or going for a walk – sometimes, where money allows, to go on holiday! My fiancé however… we couldn’t be more different; he’s happy sitting on the sofa chilling at home! He’s at his most content when sat at home watching TV or playing on his PlayStation.
I know some people like to go for a run (my worst nightmare), complete a personal challenge, spend loads of money, spend time with friends, drink, eat (yes!)…
However we rest, no one is the same. If we all were, think how boring that would be…
How do you like to rest?
