An evening with… Daisy Buchanan

Daisy Buchanan and Rebecca Fletcher at The Yard, Hampshire

Hello, welcome… to February! At the time of writing, I have just got back from seeing Daisy Buchanan at The Yard, Hampshire, interviewed by the wonderful Rebecca Fletcher.

The last time I was at the Yard, I saw one of my favourite writers, Emma Gannon, where I left feeling super inspired – I feel very lucky to have a great venue so close by, hence taking advantage of the events that pop up.

Now, I’m ferociously tapping away at my keyboard as inspiration hits me once again, having connected with people interested in the same topics as me. In such an ironically disconnected, interconnected world, we’re so far away when tucked behind screens, hence cherishing the small moments of being near other people (maybe not on a packed tube as I will be tomorrow).

The conversation was driven by her latest novel Limelight, which I found satisfyingly strange, I realise I totally skimmed over the feminist elements which are key to the story… anyhow, topics ranged from her inspiration in Jilly Cooper and Marian Keyes novels through to ‘scheduling affairs’, Mills & Boon, bonk-buster books, and merkins! It was definitely an evening full of the odd chuckle, in true Daisy style.

As always Rebecca was the best host, drawing upon each of Daisy’s novels, fiction and non-fiction, convincing me to want to read the latter – I managed to get my copy of Insatiable signed too, which has been on my TBR for a long time… (not for much longer!)

I was a bit too shy for the Q&A, but ended up asking Daisy when she kindly signed my book about her writing routine (I’m a sucker for wanting to know about any writer/author).

Daisy writes in the mornings, before getting distracted by emails, social media and the like, which most of us are guilty of. She enquired about my own writing, where I am currently at 70k words – a big achievement! I should really get better at celebrating the small wins…

She recommended the Pomodoro method, which I’ve heard of but not implemented, so I’m keen to give it a go, as well as “embroider the last ‘few’ words” she beautifully described as a way to get the final version of my first draft complete.

Thanks Daisy!

What a wonderful evening – can’t wait for the next one xx
